Newsletter 11 - Life Really Sucks Sometimes... But Hard Things Make Us Better

Life Really Sucks Sometimes... But Hard Things Make Us Better

Hey Everyone, Dr. Dante here.

This newsletter is just me writing unfiltered. More so than anything, this is therapeutic for me. Just getting some of my thoughts, frustrations, sadness, and gratefulness out.

Life can be so wonderful, but it also really sucks sometimes. I thought the hardest thing I would do in 2025 was start a business. Then it was replaced by fracturing my collarbone and recovering from that. A process that is still ongoing.

My family and I got some rejuvenation recently though, having the time of our lives on vacation in Belize for a week. But less than 36 hours from returning home life threw another challenge at our family. And this has become the hardest thing yet for us to face this year.

My older son, Leo, fractured his right lower leg last week. He was just playing as an innocent child, but as is possible at any moment in life, he experienced an unfortunate traumatic accident. He broke both bones in his lower leg, his tibia and fibula, with the bones penetrating his skin creating an open wound. Fortunately, my wife was there with him to respond. And my amazing 6 year old helping her with flagging down the paramedics.

Into the ambulance and off to CHKD. When I got there it was overwhelming the amount of medical personnel in and outside of his emergency room.

It’s so hard to see your child like that. Trying to keep it together to keep him at ease, but underneath feeling so sad, scared, and helpless. On the other hand, also feeling so in awe with how my tough little guy handled probably the most frightening day of his life.

He underwent a 2 hour surgery to realign his bones and stabilize the fracture. Because of the complexity of the fracture and wound, they had to externally fixate the fracture. This means he has hardware that protrudes out of his body keeping his bones together. Three days later he went back into the operating room to undergo another procedure to fully the close the wound on his leg. Everything went well, and after 5 long days in the hospital we are finally home.

It feels so unfair. He’ll be celebrating his 9th birthday on August 31, but not in the way we had planned. He will be starting 3rd grade in September, but that will look a lot different for him. He’ll miss out on playing flag football and baseball this fall, and basketball this winter.

It all just sucks!

But I’m also trying to keep it in perspective. It could be worse. We are fortunate to have access to great healthcare. We are fortunate to have resources to care for him. We are fortunate to have amazing family and friends. We are fortunate that I’m a physical therapist and can help him rehabilitate.

My heart hurts for him. I want to take away all his pain. I want to take away his sadness. I want to take away his fear, his anxiety. I want to go back in time and stop this from happening. I want to give him his life back right now.

It will be a long tough journey for Leo, but we will get through it. This will be the hardest thing he will have to do to this point in his 9 years of life. It will be the hardest thing our family will have to go through too. But, it will make us all better people. It will make us more grateful and appreciative. It will let us learn and grow.

One. Day. At. A. Time.

One final note, we are so thankful for the paramedics and EMTs from Chesapeake Fire EMS and all the doctors, nurses, and staff at CHKD for taking care of our boy. Everyone has been amazing.
