This month we launched our Small Group for Runners. We’re just two weeks into an 8-week program and we are PUMPED about it! It’s been a part of a much longer term plan, come to fruition, expanding our programming to address sport specific needs. It’s a big milestone for us, and a particularly meaningful moment for me.
We work with a number of highly competitive runners and there are so many others in our area who run recreationally that we have been able to help regain confidence in the sport by making meaningful and lasting changes to their posture and form. We feel we can improve both performance and enjoyment of the sport with our unique philosophy on movement. We also target specific exercises and strategies to keep the body working efficiently for the demands of running. Brittney’s story in our previous newsletter is a really great example. If you’ve been following us on social media you may have seen some of her progress.
We’ve been really fortunate to have met a lot of people and formed many meaningful relationships within the running community and especially through our work with Tidewater Striders. This month we are also proud to be a sponsor for the 22nd annual Love Run and are grateful for the participation of our members here at Movement Redefined who will form a team of 17 runners strong that will take part and support the cause.
On the subject of involvement and community, one of the very most important benefits of being able to move well and without limitation, is the ability to participate. This is something we rarely give attention until it's taken away. One definition I found for the word participate is “to take part in an action or endeavor”. As basic as that may seem, it simply CAN NOT be taken for granted. The other side of that, the inability to participate, to have your own autonomy be determined by pain or dysfunction, goes far beyond physical symptoms. When you CAN’T do an activity, when your access to social involvement and community is impacted, the mental and emotional health consequences are immeasurable.
During the first session of our Small Group for Runners, I asked everyone to go around and share what their running goals are. We have a few people training for upcoming races like the Shamrock. Another has a longer term plan for an Ultramarathon. One member said, almost indicating a comparatively less important response, “I’m not training for any race or event really, I run something almost every weekend, so just to keep running”. And that’s the one that really hit me. It isn’t always the achievement of one single event, but the value of being able to simply continue to do something that you love. Being able to continue to do the the things that bring you joy, that keep you involved in community, week in and week out, and not have that thing taken away.
Going back to the significance, personally, of welcoming in our first four members of the Runner’s Group, is that until this past year, it was a community in which I had never been able to appreciate the feeling of belonging. And so what this particular member said, just being honest in a moment, hit me like a ton of bricks. When I shared that this year I had set a goal, to become a runner. I realized here I am the “expert”, coaching the people in front of me to reach their goals, and each of them already had what I aspired to achieve.
You’ll have to stay tuned for the next newsletter to hear more of my story and about what running means to me….
