Newsletter 14 - A Broken Leg Doesn't Need Physical Therapy?

A Broken Leg Doesn't Need Physical Therapy?

Dr. Dante here with an update on my older son, and something I find absolutely crazy with his care. But before we get into that, we have some really exciting announcements for you!

First, we have launched a Referral Reward program. It's pretty simple. When you refer a friend, family member, co-worker, or anyone for that matter, to us and they book their first session, you’ll earn a FREE session of your choice.

  1. Share your experience with someone you know.
  2. They mention your name when booking.
  3. You get rewarded with a FREE session to use however you’d like.

Next, we're also excited to offer new Live Fully Memberships! These memberships are designed to give you the best of all that Movement Redefined has to offer.

Our Live Fully Membership allows you to have a physical therapy session with Dr. Dante once a month to check-in, re-assess, and progress your movement. It's a great addition for those who have a personal training or small group package to take a deeper dive into their movement patterns and to optimize their exercise.

Our Live Fully + Personal Training Membership gives you regular collaborative coaching from both Dr. Dante and Matt. This is a great option for those coming to the end of their physical therapy package to transition to exercise progression and performance coaching, but continuing to have guidance from physical therapy.

Simply respond to this email to get signed up for your membership!

Okay, back to my older son. As a reminder, he had a traumatic injury on August 18, fracturing both his lower leg bones in his right leg with his shin bone coming through his skin. He underwent 3 surgical procedures in 16 days. He has his moments, but remarkably has been doing well.

Since his last surgery, about 3 weeks ago, he has been in a long cast that goes up to his hip. The plan is for him to be in that cast for 1 more week, then transition to a short cast that will just go up to below his knee. After 4 weeks in that cast he will transition to a walking boot for another 4 weeks. It's a long process, with about 4 months of not putting weight on his right leg. Then comes the hard part of regaining mobility and strength.

Ok, but now for the crazy part, at least in my opinion.

Here are some of the instructions we received following my son's last surgery when they placed him in a cast.

I know I'm completely biased because of my profession, but how does this make any logical sense? The kid is an active multi-sport athlete. It will be some 4 months of non-weight bearing, compensations, and muscle atrophy.

To me, this is exactly a reason for why the profession of physical therapy exists.

It is true that he is young, and over time with getting back to standing, walking, running, and being a kid that he should be able to do life at a minimum and survive.

But what kind of life is that? What about the long-term implications of muscle imbalances, weakness, and mobility limitations? If he doesn't receive more specific treatment, how does that potentially alter his life and predispose him to developing mechanical and lifestyle conditions such as arthritis?

I can tell you this, this Doctor of Physical Therapy will be going against doctor's recommendations. My son will be getting regular physical therapy. We will be working hard together to combat months of compensations, re-establish movement patterns, optimize his mobility, and progress his strength.

The goal is not simply just surviving. Our goal is for him to get back to playing sports at a high level, running around with his friends at school, and to Live Fully!

My Recent Experience with Healthcare... And How We're Different Hello Movement Redefined Followers! Dr. Dante here with an update on my collarbone and my recent experience with accessing healthcare. It has been a little more than 9 weeks since I fractured my right collarbone. The first few weeks were quite sore and uncomfortable.
