Making My Comeback
By Dr. Dante Leone
It's been some tough months for me physically recently. I'm used to moving my body and pushing myself with exercise. The last few years that has included participating in triathlons, which if you're not familiar, is a race consisting of swimming, cycling, and running.
However, that all changed on July 5. If you have been a longtime reader of our newsletters, you know that I had an injury that involved fracturing my collarbone that day. You don't realize how much your collarbone is involved with everyday movements until you break it. Immediately, I was limited with my physical activity and exercise. Even walking was hard.
Over time the acute pain improved and I was able to start reintroducing some activity, but mostly this involved walking. First, I tried letting my collarbone heal as is, but ultimately, it was healing correctly. A drawn out process eventually lead to a surgery to repair my collarbone.
The last race I participated in was on June 8. A triathlon in Jamestown. I was in exceptional shape at that time, finishing atop my age group. The goal is never to win, just to push my limits, do my best, and compete against myself.
In the past few weeks I have been able to reintroduce running. I worked myself up to 3-4 miles, not at my my fastest pace, but feeling good. So, I decided to challenge myself and entered a 5k.
Exactly 5 months after my last race, on Saturday, November 8, I entered the Tidewater Striders Salute to Service 5k. I had no expectations or goal other than to do my best with where I was currently at physically.
The handful of training runs I did before this race I was running at a 7:30 pace. Not bad at all, but definitely slower than my typical pace. But this is why participating in races is so much fun. It unlocks a level of performance that you simply can't access on your own.
Over the course of the 3.1 miles I averaged a 6:44 pace. Good enough for 18th place overall and second in my age group. Adrenaline and the sense of competition are some amazing performance enhancing drugs. The best part is I felt really good afterwards. No pain, though it was a bit tasking on my cardiovascular system.
I feel like I'm finally getting a sense of my identity back. It has been a long journey, challenging me both physically and mentally, but my goals are out there. I just have to keep putting in the consistent work; The small steps everyday to reach those bigger accomplishments of Living Fully!
