Spread Love in 2026!
By Dr. Dante Leone
Something truly amazing happened to my family last week.
My wife, Bethany, was on a routine Target run with our boys. As part of our routine with our Target runs recently we give the kids a few minutes to play the Nintendo Switch at the demo display in the electronics department.
We have yet to have any sort of a gaming system at home. It's something we have resisted for a while to limit the boys overall screen time. However, this year a Nintendo Switch 2 was at the top of our boys' Christmas list.
Two days before Christmas Bethany and our kids were playing away at Target when they were approached by a man. He asked if they wanted a Switch. Caught off guard, distracted by the game they were playing, and confused by the question, Bethany initially said no, thanks. However, he asked again, which got Bethany's attention, so she asked what was this all about.
He stated that he is going around spreading kindness and generosity. He told Bethany that he collects donations all year, then goes around to different locations and uses the money to do random acts of kindness for strangers, and that he would like to buy our boys the Nintendo Switch gaming system.
He went to the counter, bought the system, gave the bag to the boys gave Bethany the change, $400 total in the gift and cash. Then he left. He didn't want any recognition. He didn't even share his name.
He was off to his next stop to spread more holiday cheer.
Bethany was in so much shock about what happened that her and the boys left Target without purchasing any of things they had gone to the store for in the first place.
When they got home they were all so excited to tell me what happened. I was, of course, in disbelief. Someone is out there just randomly spending hundreds of dollars on complete strangers!?
Then a sense of guilt settled in. We are not the people who need a gift like this. There are many more people that could use this man's help. My initial thought was we have to return this and give the money to someone else.
Also, unaware to this stranger, or to my children, "Santa" was already bringing them a Nintendo Switch 2 for Christmas. We did not need a second gaming system.
Bethany and I were able to convince the boys to put the gaming system away in a closet and wait to see what was to come on Christmas morning. This also gave us time to process and come up with a solution.
After Christmas morning and opening gifts, we were able to have a mature conversation with our boys. They understood we didn't need two gaming systems. They understood that there are people in need of help more than we are. We let them be involved in the plan and solution.
We still wanted the kids to feel special, and be able to enjoy this act of kindness from a stranger. We returned the system, but allowed them to keep some of the money to spend how they wanted. We also wanted to provide them the opportunity to spread their own kindness, love, and generosity. So, with the remaining money, we purchased gift cards and distributed them to a local charity.
I'm so proud of how my boys handled this situation. It's been a challenging year, and I'm so happy they were able to have this experience. But they also were able to understand that there are other people in their community that could also use some kindness.
This experience is also a great reminder that there is still good in the world. I preach to my kids all the time to put love out into the world and love will come to you. As we go into a new year, let's use this story as a reminder to spread love. Not only to our friends and families, but to complete strangers too. You'll make someone's day. And maybe they'll carry that love forward, and the compounding kindness and generosity will spread and change lives.
Be kind. Choose love.
Happy New Year! Cheers to an amazing 2026!
