Low Back Pain... No one is immune
Hey Everyone! Dr. Dante here again.
Today, I want to tell you a story about low back pain. First, just because I'm a physical therapist doesn't mean I don't have occasional aches and pains or injuries. These things are part of the human experience.
One of the most common pains that almost everyone will have at some point in their life is low back pain. There are various reasons and causes for low back pain, but many have to do with our upright two-legged posture and managing our bodies against the force of gravity.
That brings me to a time when low back pain got me. Several years ago, I was getting ready for work. I bent over to pick up my shoes, like I have done thousands of times before, but this time I got a stabbing pain in the right side of my back. I fell over onto my bed, with severe pain, and could barely move. Prior to this I had some mild low back pain at times, but never anything like this.
I was able to get to work that day thanks to my sister, but not to see patients, but as a patient myself.
Being unable to work was hard, but the more devastating thing was my inability to pick up and hold my infant son. At this point, he was just a few months old. I was a father for the first time, but unable to help care for my child.
Fortunately, I was able to get treatment quickly, which helped reduce the acute pain. Then, I made myself an exercise program, and over a few weeks was able to get back to doing life. But I didn't stop there. I made it a mission to learn about my body, and why this happened to me. I changed my exercise and mobility routines to make sure other areas of my body were moving well to reduce the stress on my low back. I didn't want to ever experience this again.
Luckily, I haven't had any issues like that since. But it's because I keep working at it. Treatment doesn't stop when you get feeling better. You have to keep putting in the work to keep yourself feeling better. It's an ongoing journey.
That's why I do what I do as a physical therapist. I've made it my career to help others move beyond pain, get feeling better, perform at their best, and Live Fully! Because I've been there and I know how awful it can be. If there is anything we can do to help prevent you from having that experience or help you finally find solutions to your aches and pain let me know. We're here to help!
