Newsletter 8 - When the Doctor Becomes the Patient

I've Become My Own Patient

This was definitely not the plan for this newsletter, but that's how life goes. You're thrown a curveball, and you have to adjust and chart a new path forward. Any of you who have been in to our gym and saw me recently may have noticed some bumps or bruises, or that I'm not quite moving normal. Well here's the story.

I hope you all had a great Independence Day weekend. My family and I were enjoying a fun camping trip to Holliday Lake State Park in central Virginia. On Saturday, July 5, we took a day trip to Appomattox, including a stop at the Appomattox Court House National Historical Park, where the Civil War ended.

They happened to be having a pick-up Civil War era baseball game that day, so of course we joined in on the fun. The game was set up in an open field that included trees in the outfield. We were having a lot of fun playing, but it all came to a crashing end in the 4th inning.

I was out in centerfield. A batter on the opposing team hit a fly ball out my way. I was running back to my right looking back over my left shoulder tracking the ball in the air. Then I ran smack into one of those aforementioned trees.

I came to rest on my stomach with my hands up by head. Looking at my hands, I noticed blood coming from my face, but also that my right shoulder and chest were very uncomfortable in that position. I rolled onto my back, and by that time was being surrounded by the park staff and others who had joined in the game.

My wife applied pressure to a gash above my right eye, while others tended to me, asking me questions and blocking the hot sun. Then both my arms and hands started tingling. That's when I asked for an ambulance to be called. I knew at that point that it was best to follow cervical spine precautions, including a collar and board, and to transport me to an emergency department.

Fortunately, over the course of the next 1-2 hours the tingling subsided. Testing and imaging revealed no spinal injuries. I received 4 stitches to the laceration above my eye. The worst of it was a dislocation of my collarbone.

After consulting with an orthopedist, the course of treatment is healing and rehabilitation. So now I get to practice what I preach. I have become my own patient. I must put in the work to get back to Living Fully!

It will be a journey over the next few months, but I'm grateful for the amazing community that surrounds me. Luckily, I will still be able to work and serve all my wonderful clients, but you all will be serving me too. Not being able to move my body and enjoy exercise like I normally do has already been very mentally challenging. But being able to show up to work and interact with my clients has allowed me to have purpose in a difficult time. Thank you!

I also want to express my gratitude to all the complete strangers that helped me and my family on that day. From the workers at and others visiting Appomattox Court House National Historical Park, to the volunteers at the Appomattox County Rescue Squad, fellow campers at Holliday Lake State Park, and the staff at Lynchburg General Hospital. This world can be crazy, but there are amazing people out there ready to help at the drop of a hat… or run in with a tree. Really appreciate all the love and support.
